Ewa Field was hit hard on the morning of December 7th.  Japanese aircraft tore into the base 2 minutes before the attack on Pearl Harbor.  Zero's repeatedly strafed the aircraft, men, and equipment of the base initially, and then Vals took over the job returning from their runs at Pearl Harbor.  Of the 49 aircraft based at the field that morning 33 were destroyed and 16 seriously damaged.  Ewa Field had the unfortunate luck of being near the rendezvous point for the Japanese aircraft before returning to their carriers. The Japanese airmen used the base as a last opportunity to utilize ammunition not spent at their original targets (Hawaiian, 2000).      http://www.hiavps.com/Ewa%20MCAS.htm

Preserving 'Ewa Marine Corps field an uphill struggle.

'Ewa Beach resident John Bond  GM@HawaiiN.Com  hasn't given up on his struggle to gain preservation of Marine Corps Air Corps Station 'Ewa, one of the first battlefields of U.S. involvement in World War II on Dec. 7, 1941, but he knows he's up against some powerful players with other ideas.

"Despite the recommendations that the 'Ewa Marine Corps Air Field qualifies for the National Historic Register, qualifies for national monument status, qualifies for national battlefield status and the National Battlefield Protection Program," Bond said, the Navy has other plans.

Japanese Zero fighters strafed the nearly 50 Marine aircraft at 'Ewa Field before the first raid on Pearl Harbor minutes later. Four Marines were killed during three waves of attacks.

Joel Fujita, who's now 88, remembers being on the roof of his parents' 'Ewa Plantation home about 50 yards from the base front gate. He and three brothers climbed up on the roof to see what they initially thought was a training exercise.

"A Zero fighter came over. You could see the canopy open," Fujita said. "He was waving to us, so we waved back, and about five minutes later, a plane came back and started to strafe in front of our house."

Bond, an amateur historian who has done a lot of research into 'Ewa Field, said he's pursuing a suggestion from Pearl Harbor survivor Ray Emory, who was onboard the USS Honolulu, for 'Ewa Field to become a new national veterans cemetery.

The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl has no more space for in-ground burials.

Bond is trying to rally last-minute support as the Navy, which owns the 'Ewa Field land, finalizes plans to lease to Ford Island Properties 499 acres for 40 years with an option to take title to the property.  (Tell the Secretary of the Navy, The Honorable Donald C. Winter, how you feel about the Navy selling off part of the Pearl Harbor battlefields.  Please press the link to send an email.   http://www.navy.mil/submit/contacts.asp  )

A chunk of that land includes the old 'Ewa Field runways.

The Navy said the lease still is being negotiated, with an agreement expected by the end of August. Ford Island Properties is part of the Hunt Development Group.

Steve Colon, president of the Hawai'i division of the Hunt Development Group, previously said in a statement that the Kalaeloa land "offers an opportunity to create needed jobs near the urban center of Kapolei," but added that specific plans had not been made for its use.

Bond believes Hunt will build shopping centers and expensive homes on the land, which abuts Barbers Point Golf Course.

The Navy had said 4 to 5 acres at the center of the old runways are eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, but Bond wants a bigger chunk of the old base preserved.

There's not much left to see of the airfield, with only foundation outlines, a Quonset hut and concrete building or two standing, but the original runways are still there. Dozens of arched concrete aircraft revetments remain on a separate portion of the base.

Bond's development concerns for the area are evident in plans like the final lease agreement that recently was signed to bring as a neighbor to 'Ewa Field a big shopping center.

The agreement was announced by the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and the Tampa, Fla.-based Hawai'i DeBartolo LLC. The center, called Ka Makana Ali'i, will have 1.6 million square feet of commercial space.

Fujita recalls a very different time, when Marines in 1941 used to walk over and wait in the family's front yard for the bus to town.

"We had four good friends, Marine pilots, and we used to do their laundry," Fujita said.

He also remembers during the Dec. 7 attack a Marine wounded and in bandages coming into the street with a rifle looking for Japanese infiltrators.

More than a decade later, when McOrin Lima was a Marine at the adjacent Barbers Point Naval Air Station, 'Ewa Field already was closed. He was stationed there from 1955 to 1959.

In the first three months of duty, Lima was a gate guard, and then he became a patrol driver "driving every road, nook, cranny and crease on that base," Lima said. "So I knew that base very well."

At the end of what had been Runway 22 were cables stretched across the runway attached to heavy chains, Lima said. "I surmise that if a plane was coming in, they would raise that cable to arrest any plane that was going to crash," he said.

Larry Galola wrote in to say photos of the concrete aircraft revetments brought back memories of when they were used as bomb shelters for elementary students during the early 1950s.

"I attended Barbers Point Elementary School back then and it was located on the edge of the airfield. During the Cold War bomb drills we walked to those revetments and took shelter there," he said. "I also recall exploring all the old abandoned WWII bunkers as a kid living on base."

IN BRIEF

Rimpac naval exercises under way

Rim of the Pacific, or Rimpac, naval exercises officially began yesterday and will take place in Hawai'i waters through July 31. Rimpac is a multinational exercise designed to improve integration and interoperability as well as prepare forces for a wide range of potential combined joint operations and missions, the Navy said.

Ten countries will come together in the largest combined force exercise conducted this year. Participating nations include Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, the Netherlands, Peru, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Rimpac forces include 20 U.S. Navy ships, 13 foreign ships, two Coast Guard vessels, three U.S. submarines, three foreign submarines, more than 150 U.S. and foreign aircraft, 18 other U.S. Navy and Marine Corps units and 11 foreign units.

U.S. ships participating include the aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk; amphibious ships Bonhomme Richard and Comstock; two guided-missile cruisers, Lake Erie and Port Royal; and five guided-missile destroyers, Paul Hamilton, Milius, O'Kane, Pinckney and Chung-Hoon. U.S. submarines participating are the Los Angeles, Key West and Santa Fe.

ALOHA!

Help to "jog" the Whitehouse memory about Saving Ewa Field.

Ask the President or Laura Bush to make Ewa Field part of the

"Wider Pearl Harbor Monument".

Even though it is now on the list- showing SUPPORT would help!

*************************************************************
Laura Bush has made it part of her PERSONAL AGENDA to save American Battlefields- including PACIFIC Battlefields, thanks certainly to the fact that her Father-In-Law was a Navy pilot and shot down in the Pacific.

SEND HER an EMAIL:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact

*************************************************************

HONOLULU  -  President Bush has asked his defense and interior secretaries to look into designating Pearl Harbor and other historic World War II sites in the Pacific a national monument.

"These objects of historical and scientific interest may tell the broader story of the war, the sacrifices made by America and its allies, and the heroism and determination that laid the groundwork for victory in the Pacific and triumph in World War II," Bush said.

The letter, posted on the White House Web site, doesn't say what specific places Bush has in mind aside from Pearl Harbor.

The memorandum made no mention of other sites being contemplated, but Midway and Wake islands and Guam were the sites of crucial World War II battles.

Today, Midway is mainly a wildlife bird refuge and key node in the island chain making up the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument that Bush established in 2006. The former naval base, where the U.S. defeated Japan in June 1942 to turn the tide of World War II in the Pacific, was named a National Historic Landmark in 1986.

The president doesn't need Congressional approval to designate national monuments.

*************************************************************

March 2, 2007 speech by Laura Bush in HAWAII:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/03/20070302-9.html

"I want to thank all the preservationists, the conservationists, the researchers, the local officials, the state senators and representatives, the cultural leaders, and the distinguished guests who are here today that have made this occasion possible."

"Preservation -- of our environment, our history, and our culture -- is an issue that President Bush and I care about very deeply."

For Harry Ferrier, caring for the archipelago means respecting the place where hundreds of Americans gave their lives to preserve our freedom. This former Navy man is 82 years old -- he likes to call himself an "ancient mariner" -- but Harry clearly remembers the 17-year-old who served his country in the most important naval battle in our history.  Early on the morning of June 4th, 1942, Harry's plane was one of the first to encounter the Imperial Japanese fleet at Midway. Harry had volunteered to fly in one of six Grumman torpedo planes assigned to the carrier Hornet. His was the only plane that came back -- but not before taking nine cannon hits and 47 machine-gun bullets. One of these bullets killed the gunner on Harry's plane, another wounded the pilot, and two more struck Harry.

After the plane's successful attack and landing, which earned the pilot two Navy Crosses, it was brought to Pearl Harbor. And there it underwent battle damage assessments that led to mechanical upgrades on the Grumman Avenger.

Those upgrades saved the lives of other American aviators in the war, including a young Avenger pilot named George H.W. Bush, my father-in-law.

Even though Harry was seriously wounded at Midway, and one of only three survivors among his squadron's 48 members, he was back in service a month later. He served aboard the carrier Enterprise, fought at Guadalcanal, and retired as a Navy commander in 1970. When Harry visits Midway -- most recently with Dr. Robert Ballard, in search of sunken American and Japanese carriers -- he remembers the same white sand beaches. He remembers the din of those albatross. But mostly, Harry said, "I remember my shipmates who never came back."

To Harry, caring for the archipelago means preserving a place where Americans can "honor the sacrifices people made to win that war. It's a place to remember how important they were to our nation, and how, during one moment's time in Midway's history, they preserved timeless ideals of freedom."

Midway's military history, too, will be preserved at Papahanaumokuakea, part of the National Parks Centennial Initiative, which Secretary Kempthorne will tell us about in a minute. We'll hope to expand visitor access to Midway Island and educate millions of visitors to the Main Hawaiian islands about the war in the Pacific.

USS ARIZONA Marine Remembrance At Pearl Harbor

From:    Colonel John R. Bates USMC (ret)     jrbatesusmc@aol.com

UPDATE:   A couple of years ago, I was the Operations Officer for the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, on the waterfront between the USS ARIZONA and the USS BOWFIN. The Commandant of the Marine Corps was the featured speaker at the dedication of the USS ARIZONA Marine Remembrance, 10 November 2006. The National Park Service, which administers the USS ARIZONA Memorial is renovating all of Halawa Landing, the site of the Marine Remembrance. The Regional Director of the Natl Park Service Western Region, Jon Jarvis, stated on the local TV news that the Marine Remembrance would be removed. I challenged him on that statement and convinced him that would not happen without a fight. I passed the word to (disabled Vietnam vet) Jack Cunningham (Americans Working Together), who in turn asked his readership to email Jarvis that the entire USMC would make every effort to have him relieved of his duties if he moved that monument. I was copied on many of the emails to him from Marines, their friends and their families that it nearly fried my computer. And...it worked. In order to save his job, Jarvis backed down. The Remembrance now belongs to the USMC and has its' rightful place in direct view of the USS ARIZONA.
