Jack Cunningham served in CAP 2-9-2 (Phu Da/Duc Duc Resettlement Village) from around April 1970
through August 1970 when 9th Company 2nd CAG was disbanded due to President Nixon's Troop Withdraw from Vietnam. He
was then assigned to CAP 2-2-2 until February 1971.

Why do we limit access to the official documents?
Large portions of the CAP 2-7-2 website have been stolen on two occasions. On one occasion, all our
letters and half-a-dozen photos were taken and sold to a for-profit website. The seller fraudulently claimed ownership of
the material. Luckily, the buyer recognized our copyright and removed the letters and photos, losing $2,000. We might not
be so lucky next time.
The Marine Corps rosters, Unit Diaries, orders and reports in this section are public documents. But
we have invested thousands of hours requesting, typing, proofreading and coding these documents for use on the website. That
work makes THESE documents our property, but proving ownership would be difficult and expensive. So we have limited access
to this directory.

On Aug. 31, 1999, a handful of volunteers set out to put some of the essential records of
the 2nd Combined Action Group online. We want to make these documents available to everyone from veterans to students and
researchers. We have requested and received the 2nd CAG Command Chronologies for Oct.-Nov., 1968, through the 2nd CAG deactivation
in May, 1971. If you have CAP documents to share, we welcome your contributions and will put them on this website for all

2 Apr 70 A CAP 2-9-1 ambush called an artillery
fire mission on an estimated 20 VC moving S in groups of 4 to 6 VC in grid square 8847, 1 km E of Duc Duc District Headquarters.
The enemy fled S. An USEF then began a VN and English language propaganda broadcast from AT 887477, 1 km E of Duc Duc District
Headquarters. The ambush called an artillery fire mission on the suspected broadcast sight and the broadcast appealing to
Marines and PF to rally to the VC ceased. PsyOps was notified. A sweep of the area was nonproductive. RESULTS: Negative.
8 Apr 70 A CAP 2-9-1 patrol received SAF from
an USEF in a treeline at AT 888491, 2.6 km NE of Duc Duc District Headquarters. The patrol returned organic weapons fire causing
the enemy to flee N. The patrol called an artillery fire mission on probable enemy escape routes. During a sweep of the area
which disclosed 1 VC KIA, a PF member of the patrol accidentally detonated an unknown type booby trap rigged with an unknown
type firing device. 1 PF was KIA and 1 USMC received minor fragmentation wounds from the exploding SFD. A search of the area
for further SFDs was nonproductive. RESULTS: 1 PF KIA, 1 USMC WIA(M), 1 VC KIA
25 Apr 70 Many events considered "significant" by those of us in
the CAPs are not mentioned in the Command Chronologies written at headquarters. For example, Greg "Doc" Lutes writes of, and the 2nd CAG Unit Diary confirms, an April 25 incident in which one CAP 2-4-3 member
was killed and four others wounded. That incident is not mentioned in this Command Chronology. According to the Unit Diary,
the KIA was P.W. Handerhan, 2505741. The WIAs were D.J. Ensminger, 2557512; A.L. Levy, 2507980; G.G. Lutes, N B855637; and
R.J. Millwood, 2462310. Yet two days later the Command Chronology records the killing of a VC and the capture of a "pith helmet"
by 2-4-3.
8 May 70 CACO 2-9 Headquarters, located adjacent
to Duc Duc District Headquarters at AT 862484, received 6 82mm HE rounds and a CAP 2-9-2 patrol base at AT 866477, 1 km NW
of Duc Duc District Headquarters, received 6 60mm HE rounds from an USEF in an unknown location. Four VN civilians were WIA
from the exploding mortar rounds at the CACO 2-9 Headquarters location. The CACO 2-9 Headquarters rendered first aid and medevaced
the WIA civilians. RESULTS: 4 VN civilians WIA(E).
10 May 70 A combined operation of CAP 2-9-2,
elements of the 5th Marines, PF Plt 124 and RF Company 369 initiated organic weapons fire and called a fixed wing air strike
on 15 VC moving E at AT 886498, 2.1 km NE of Duc Duc District Headquarters. The enemy returned fire with M-79 HE rounds, SAF
and fled E. One USMC received minor fragmentation wounds in the contact. A sweep of the area disclosed 1 ton of buried rice
which was given to the RF unit to distribute among local villagers. RESULTS: 1 USMC WIA(M), 1 ton of rice captured.
15 May 70 A CACO 2-9 Headquarters and CAP 2-9-2
patrol called a fixed wing air strike on 5 VC eating rice at AT 878498, 1.9 km N of Duc Duc District Headquarters. The enemy
fled in an unknown direction without returning fire. A sweep of the area disclosed 1 VC KIA, 3 destroyed bunkers, 150m of
destroyed trenchline, 3 homemade C-4 explosive filled "C" ration can booby traps on separate trails each rigged with a trip
wire firing device. The SFDs were destroyed. RESULTS: 1 VC KIA; 3 surprise firing devices, 3 bunkers and 150m of trench lines
were destroyed.
19 May 70 A CAP 2-9-2 patrol received 2 ChiCom
grenades from an USEF at AT 866492, 1.6 km NW of Duc Duc District Headquarters. The patrol returned organic weapons fire causing
the enemy to flee NE. Two USMC, 1 PF and 1 VN civilian received minor fragmentation wounds and 1 VN civilian was KIA from
the exploding enemy grenades. A sweep of the area was nonproductive. RESULTS: 2 USMC WIA(M), 1 PF WIA(M), 1 VN civilian KIA,
1 VN civilian WIA(M). 19 May 70 A CAP 2-9-2 ambush
received 6 ChiCom grenades and SAF from 5 VC at AT 866486, 1.4 km NW of Duc Duc District Headquarters. The ambush returned
organic weapons fire causing the enemy to flee N. Two USMC and 4 PF were WIA in the contact and medevaced by vehicle to the
5th Marines BAS. A sweep of the area disclosed 1 VC KIA, 1 cartridge belt and 4 ChiCom grenades. The cartridge belt was delivered
to District Headquarters. The grenades were destroyed in place. RESULTS: 2 USMC WIA(E), 4 PF WIA(E), 1 VC KIA; 1 cartridge
belt captured; 4 ChiCom grenades destroyed.
11 June 70 A CAP 2-9-2 patrol base at AT 867491,
1.6 km NW of Duc Duc District Headquarters received 1 M-26 grenade from an USEF in an unknown location. Lacking a discernable
target, the CAP did not return fire. One KCS was KIA, 3 USMC, 1 USN, 3 PF and 1 VN civilian were WIA from the exploding grenade.
All of the WIA were rendered first aid and medevaced by vehicle to 5th Marines Regimental Aid Station. A sweep of the area
was nonproductive. RESULTS: 1 KCS KIA, 3 USMC WIA(E), 1 USN WIA(E), 3 PF WIA(E) and 1 VN civilian WIA(E).
27 June 70 In a combined operation of CAP 2-9-2
and elements of the 5th Marines, a USAF spotter plane observed an estimated 15 VC in green uniforms changing into civilian
clothes at AT 875496, 1.6 km N of Duc Duc District Headquarters. The USAF spotter plane called a fixed wing air strike on
the enemy location causing the enemy to flee in an unknown direction. A sweep of the area by CAP 2-9-2 disclosed 1 VC KIA
and 2 dud 250 lb bombs. The VC KIA was a female. The CAP destroyed the 2 dud bombs. RESULTS: 1 VC KIA, 2 dud 250 lb bombs
destroyed.
28 June 70 A CAP 2-9-1 patrol base heard an
English language propaganda broadcast emanating from the vicinity of Mau Chanh (2) and Thach Ban Hamlets at AT 896497, 2.6
km NE of Duc Duc District Headquarters. The broadcast appealed to the Marines to go back to the United States and said the
VC would pay $100,000 U.S. currency for a USMC rallier. The VC also stated to the local villagers, they would pay $50 U.S.
currency for each USMC KIA and for each USMC weapon captured. A platoon from RF Company 215 located nearest the broadcast
called an 81mm mortar illumination mission in an attempt to locate the VC making the broadcast. A sweep of the area by the
CAP and RF unit was nonproductive.
30 June 70 A CAP 2-9-1 ambush received mixed
60mm HE and 82mm HE mortar rounds and SAF from an estimated 30 VC at AT 893477, 1.9 km SW of Duc Duc District Headquarters.
The ambush returned organic weapons fire and called an 81mm mortar fire mission on the enemy location causing the enemy to
flee N. One PF was KIA and 2 PF received minor fragmentation wounds in the contact. A sweep of the area was nonproductive.
RESULTS: 1 PF KIA and 2 PF WIA(M).
17 July 70 A sentry dog, while on a CAP 2-9-1
patrol accidentally detonated a 60mm mortar round booby trap rigged with a pressure type firing device at AT 888492, 2 km
SW of Duc Duc District Headquarters. The sentry dog was KIA and the dog handler was WIA from the exploding SFD. The USMC was
medevaced by helicopter. A search of the area for further SFDs was nonproductive. RESULTS: 1 USMC(E), 1 sentry dog KIA.

A PF member of a CAP 2-9-2 patrol accidentally detonated an unknown type booby trap rigged with an unknown type firing
device alerting an enemy ambush at AT 872500, 2.5 km N of Duc Duc District Headquarters. The patrol received SAF and returned
fire with organic weapons fire, 22 M-79 HE rds, |

2 M-72 LAAW rds, and called a helicopter gunship fire mission on
the enemy. The enemy fled in an unknown direction. One PF was WIA
by the exploding SFD. The PF was rendered first aid and medevaced
by helicopter. A sweep of the area was nonproductive. RESULTS: 1
PF WIA(E).
22 July 70 On a combined operation with C Co,
1st Tank Bn and E and F Companies of 2nd Bn, 5th Marines, CAPs 2-9-1 and 2-9-2 discovered 2 bunkers containing 300 lbs of
rice and 20 lbs of canned goods at AT 895495, 2.5 km NE of Duc Duc District Headquarters. A further search of the area disclosed
1 VC female obviously trying to avoid the sweep. The VN’s name appeared on the District Black List. The bunkers were
destroyed and the food was distributed among the CAP PF. Continuing on, the CAPs apprehended 4 male and 6 female VN civilians
with improper identifications and discovered 4 M-26 grenade booby traps rigged with trip wire firing devices and 2 105mm HE
dud round booby traps each rigged with pressure type firing devices at AT 895485, 2 km NE of Duc Duc District Headquarters.
A search of the area for further SFDs was nonproductive. Unresponsive to CAP PF questioning, the 10 VN and VC POW were delivered
to District Headquarters for further interrogation. The 6 booby traps were destroyed in place. RESULTS: 1 VC POW; 10 VN detainees;
6 SFDs and 2 bunkers destroyed; 300 lbs of rice and 20 lbs of canned goods captured.
2 August 70 CAP 2-9-1 patrol attempted to apprehend
1 VN female obviously trying to evade the patrol at AT 893483, 2 km NE of Duc Duc District Headquarters. CAP PF positively
identified the VN as VC and after repeated VN language warnings to halt, initiated organic weapons fire on the fleeing VC.
A sweep of the area disclosed 1 VC KIA, 5 lbs of rice and 3 lbs of fish. The food was distributed among the PFs. RESULTS:
1 VC KIA, 5 lbs of rice, 3 lbs of fish captured.
6 August 70 A CAP 2-9-1 ambush initiated organic
weapons fire on an estimated 10 VC with weapons moving SW at AT 893473, 2 km E of Duc Duc District Headquarters. The enemy
returned fire with SAF and RPG’s and fled in an unknown direction. One USMC received minor fragmentation wounds during
the contact. A sweep of the area was nonproductive. RESULTS: 1 USMC WIA(M).
11 August 70 A USMC member of a CAP 2-9-2 patrol
accidentally detonated a bounding type anti-personnel mine rigged with a trip wire firing device along a trail at AT 873494,
2 km N of Duc Duc District Headquarters. Another USMC moving to aid the first Marine accidentally detonated a second bounding
type anti-personnel mine rigged with a trip wire firing device in a field 50 meters south of the above grid. Both USMC were
KIA from the exploding mines. A sweep of the area for further SFDs was nonproductive. RESULTS: 2 USMC KIA.
12 August 70 CAP 2-9-1 PF accidentally detonated
a M-26 grenade booby trap rigged with a trip wire firing device, located on a trail at AT 889473, 1 km SE of Duc Duc District
Headquarters. The PF was WIA, and was rendered first aid and medevaced by vehicle. A search of the area for further SFDs was
nonproductive. RESULTS: 1 PF WIA(E).
14 August 70 CACO 2-9, co-located with Duc
Duc District Headquarters at AT 875476, was deactivated. CAP 2-9-1 with geographic center of the TAOC at AT 870480, 1.5 km
NE of Duc Duc District Headquarters, was deactivated. CAP 2-9-2 with a geographic center of the TAOC at AT 871492, 1.5 km
N of Duc Duc District Headquarters, was deactivated. The deactivations were with the approval of CG, III MAF.
2 October 70 USMC member of CAP 2-2-2 patrol
accidentally detonated (1) M-26 grenade booby trap rigged with a trip wire firing device submerged in a rice paddy at grid
AT 892592, 3 km NW of Dia Loc District Headquarters. The USMC was WIA from the exploding grenade and medevaced by helicopter.
RESULTS: (1) USMC WIA(E).
On 30 November 1970, Quang Nam Province suffered flooding conditions that caused several of the 2nd CAG units to be evacuated
from their respective TAOCs. All CACO HQs remained operational. Two of CACO 2-1's CAPs were evacuated to CACO HQs. All of
CACO 2-2's CAPs were evacuated to Hill 67 and Hill 35; CACO 2-3's CAPs to LZ Baldy. CACO 2-4's CAPs 2-4-1, 2-4-3 and 2-4-5
remained operational with the remaining CAPs evacuated to CACO HQs. CACO 2-7's CAPs evacuated to LZ Baldy. The Group HQ suffered
no damage. The personnel of the Group worked long hours, accomplishing difficult tasks without complaint. During this trying
