Subject: Protect our U.S. Capitol and Memorials against vandals!

The Hill newspaper reports that during the weekend of January 26th about 300 protestors spray-painted federal property on the U.S. Capitol grounds. U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) Chief Phillip Morse and Deputy Chief Daniel Nichols told police officers to allow the protestors to continue their vandalism and not to arrest anyone. The protestors actions directly violate federal law. Since the U.S. Capitol Police are answerable to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, I ask that you publicly investigate how this happened. I support the right of peaceful, non-violent demonstration; however, willful destruction of federal property is not non-violent. The U.S. Capitol belongs to every American and it, and those who represent us within it, deserve respect.

As you must surely know, anti-war activists are planning a protest on March 17, 2007. They intend to begin their protest in the vicinity of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. The area where the "proposed" protesters' permit has them assemble is on the hill overlooking the Wall (about 50 yards East). Unfortunately the route to the Pentagon from their probable gathering area is between the Wall and the reflecting basin, past the Wall, past the Women in Vietnam Statue and past the Three Soldiers Statue. This means as they walk by they can do whatever they can imagine, hopefully not spit on the Wall or toss urine or feces on it or spray paint it, but maybe try to hang signs off the statues, paste mottos on the Wall, plant signs above or below it, etc., and make it part of their political activism.

The primary purpose of US servicemen and women has been to safeguard Freedom, including the freedom of these people to protest lawfully. But that does not mean they can drag the Memorial to our fallen into their political activism. The Memorial is like the symbolic gravestone of our comrades, big, black, somber. It is NOT about politics, it is about honoring their sacrifice. It is NOT about whether this nation should not have gone to Viet Nam, or should have stayed longer and done more. It is NOT about the personalities and controversies of those days, or any other days.

Everyone should understand that the remembrance and honor we give to those who didn't come back is about THEM, and nothing else. If my brother or my son was in the antiwar movement, I would respect his convictions and support his right to protest, but I would tell him Leave The Wall out of it. Don't go there, don't even think of going there." And if the same person was rabidly supportive of our actions in Iraq and Afghanistan and wanted to paste a poster across The Wall saying "Support The Troops", I would say the same thing. Leave The Wall out of it.

Therefore, I respectfully insist that you take such actions as are necessary to prevent a recurrence of the vandalism and disrespect that occurred in last month's "protest" from being repeated. Please make sure the DC police and other law enforcement agencies are NOT ordered to allow the law to be broken again and that lawbreakers are arrested and charged with whatever crimes they commit.

UPDATE:   A couple of years ago, I was the Operations Officer for the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center, on the waterfront between the USS ARIZONA and the USS BOWFIN. The Commandant of the Marine Corps was the featured speaker at the dedication of the USS ARIZONA Marine Remembrance, 10 November 2006. The National Park Service, which administers the USS ARIZONA Memorial is renovating all of Halawa Landing, the site of the Marine Remembrance. The Regional Director of the Natl Park Service Western Region, Jon Jarvis, stated on the local TV news that the Marine Remembrance would be removed. I challenged him on that statement and convinced him that would not happen without a fight. I passed the word to (disabled vet and webmaster) Jack Cunningham (Americans Working Together), who in turn asked his readership to email Jarvis that the entire USMC would make every effort to have him relieved of his duties if he moved that monument. I was copied on many of the emails to him from Marines, their friends and their families that it nearly fried my computer. And...it worked. In order to save his job, Jarvis backed down. The Remembrance now belongs to the USMC and has its' rightful place in direct view of the USS ARIZONA.

Dear Senator Oroho,

I'm writing this request (again) on behalf of Jack Cunningham, a former active duty Marine and Vietnam veteran. Although I've never actually met him in person, simply the fact that he is a fellow Marine in need of justice, I offer to help him in any way I can. As you may know, Marines are like that. Marines take care of Marines.

Although I probably don't know all of the facts pertaining to his case against the State of New Jersey, I know enough to firmly believe that he should be heard in a public forum. His charges are serious. There are claims of abuse of power and cover-up at the highest level of the State government. When such accusations are made, I believe the leadership has no other option than to investigate. Until that is done, all that know of him and his charges will assume that there is indeed a cover-up. Perception is a powerful thing. Hopefully it won't be counter to the truth, whatever that may be.

If this is allowed to continue to fester, the results will be devastating on all involved.

If this issue is not addressed soon, my only other option is to forward this to every Marine website and public forum I can find. That option is not a good one for any of us.

Please do the right thing and give Jack his "day in court."

Back around 1990 - 91, I picked up writing movie scripts as a Therapeutic Hobby. My first script, I co-wrote with another Vietnam Veteran, who taught script writing as a profession. It's about my experiences of living (24/7) in a Vietnamese peasant-farming village in 1970. The script is copyrighted. This has nothing to do with politics. It's more about respect and honor for our sister and brother veterans and our sisters and brothers, who are currently serving honorably in our military...

ANTI-WAR PROTESTORS ATTACKED VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL

They have tried to disgrace the names of Vietnam War Dead before...

Gathering of Eagles is an act of love by thousands of veterans who choose to honor the sacrifice of the fallen by guarding the memorials from those who would desecrate them on March 17th in a “peaceful” anti-war rally in Washington D.C.

It is also a call to action for every American who chooses to stand and say “No more!” to those who would spit on our veterans and ridicule their service to our nation.

We invite you to join us March 17th, as we stand together as one to ensure that the sacrifices of our fallen and the memorials that remember them are not tarnished by the ungrateful.

My hometown of Rosedale, Queens had its Vietnam Veteran Memorial attacked by Anti-War Protesters. In May 1970, while serving in my peasant-farming village of Phu Da/Duc Duc, I received copies of the below pictures.

THE VIETNAM WOMEN'S MEMORIAL http://www.nps.gov/archive/vive/memorial/women.htm

The newest addition to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commemorative Plaque also known as the In Memory Plaque. Located in the northeast corner of the Three Servicemens Statue plaza this plaque honors those service members that died after the war, but as a direct result of injuries suffered while in Vietnam, but that do not fall within the Department of Defense guidelines. The In Memory Plaque was dedicated November 10, 2004.
